In this photo, Dr. C. Gunnar Blomqvist stands on the back of a car at Cape Canaveral, Florida, most likely to watch the launch of the space shuttle Columbia for NASA mission STS-40. The STS-40 mission carried the Spacelab module for Spacelab Life Sciences 1, the first NASA flight dedicated to human medical research. UT Southwestern's research project was one of 18 on the flight and investigated the effects of weightlessness on the circulatory system. UT Southwestern's project was designed by a group of researchers led by Dr. Blomqvist (sometimes spelled "Blomquist"), who was the Principal Investigator.
